Affirmation

Before beginning class each day, all staff and students stand together and recite an affirmation:
Because I am a member of this world, I gladly take my place next to my family and peers.  I am capable of bringing good things into my life.  My mind conceives it; my head believes it and I achieve it.  I have goals and with my total commitment, determination, dedication, and hard work, I reach my goals and I feel proud and strong!  Nyamukani.

Melt

Every morning at the Knoxville Center, staff and students participate in Morning Melt.  The Melt is led by a staff member and involves a quieting of the self followed by a series of breathing exercises.  The purpose of the Melt is to release negative thoughts and energy and to bring oxygen into the brain and body for clear and focused thinking.  All staff and students are expected to participate.  The Melt is a research-based practice and is done in conjunction with Aggression Replacement Training.

KCSS Awarded Grants

KCSS was awarded a Peoria District #150 Foundation Grant in the amount of $1500, to work with sculptor Preston Jackson to create a steel sculpture that will hang from the ceiling of our building foyer.  Throughout the school year, small groups of students worked with Mr. Jackson in his downtown art studio to draw our school mascot--the dolphin--on large sheets of aluminum.  The shapes were then cut out using a high-powered water laser.  Students will continue to work over the summer to paint the sculpture.  A ceremony for installation will be scheduled in the fall.

National City awarded Knoxville Center $850 to begin an after-school program.  The grant was used to purchase sewing machines, material, pillows, ribbons, and healthy snacks for students who stayed after school once each week throughout the winter and spring.  Students designed and sewed pillow cases using embroidered pieces of art that were made by our arts partners in Zimbabwe.  Students had a great time with the project and loved showing their pillows off to friends and family!
